Semi-shade solutions

With this extensive project we had an unused bed and that means options!

A tricky unused bramble infested bed in part shade/woodland…hmmmm, tricky one.

However when analysing the sun moving across the sky in Summer now, I can spot our patches of shade and full sun. So choosing planting to meet these conditions is critical.

The main spine of this gardens bed is to use the Copper tones of the Cotinus at the far end of the bed as a colour guide running though the bed. We use these colour tones in selecting a similarly toned Sambucus and other copper leaved shrubs to form the backbone of the bed.

Contrasting these copper tones we selected lime green tones to add contrast and please the eye, we selected a Choisya to work with these copper tones.

Then adding Salvia and Lupins to the sunnier parts of the bed, along with yellow pops from Rudbekhia Laciniata Herbstone to rise above the planting. Pops of pink from the Salvia and also Verbena Bonariensis will punctuate the area and orange from Crocosmia Lucifer will work with these warm, hot colours.

I cannot wait to see this in bloom! Take a walk with me round the bed in this video.
